چکیده

Abstract Background Mass spectrometry allows for analysis of multiple hormone and organic acid metabolites from small urine volumes; however, to assess the full extent daily production, 24-h collections are usually required. The aims this study were, first, confirm that mass spectrometric an array hormones acids would yield similar results in both liquid dried urine, and, second, determine if collection four spot samples could be substituted a when measuring reproductive hormones. Methods Two populations were included prospective observational study. Twenty individuals collected on filter paper analyze eight acids. A second group 26 urines during waking hours throughout same day evaluation 17 metabolites; data 18 these available compare versus results. Dried was extracted, hydrolyzed, derivatized before by spectrometry; all analytes normalized creatinine. Results Reproductive excellent agreement with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) greater than 0.90; comparison showed good (ICC range: 0.75 0.99). Comparison between 4-spot methods > 0.9) 14 others 0.78 0.85) no systematic differences two collection. Conclusions burden can reduced using without compromising comparability large number assessed those urine. Given ease sample handling, assay useful clinical assessment patients epidemiologic studies.

Hormone Metabolites in Dried Urine

Steroid hormones are low molecular weight, lipid-like molecules that are synthesized from cholesterol mostly in specialized glands such as the adrenals, ovaries, and testes. Once synthesized, these steroids are released into the bloodstream where they enter target tissues/cells and bind to specific hormone receptors. There, the hormone-receptor complex activates specific gene sites and stimulat...
